Have you ever been running and asked yourself, am I doing this right? Although running seems super simplistic, there are actually a number of technical points to think about. From cadence to foot strike, it’s hard to understand whether or not you are doing right. Especially, if you are training by yourself. That’s where Lumo Run comes in.
Getting Down To The Data
Lumo Run is a device that clips to the back of your running shorts and gets technical about your run. Lumo tracks everything a personal running coach would and gives you the data to back it up. Using a lab-grade 9-axis sensor along with their algorithms Lumo Run is able to capture the biomechanics fo your run via the core movements in your body.
The device measures cadence by calculating the number of steps per minute. They even have a guide to help increase your cadence at about 10% at a time. Cadence is the almost counter-intuitive way of running, by shorting your stride. This helps maintain a more solid foot strike and prevents injury.
Lumo also offers data on your “bounce” or more officially known the vertical oscillation in your pelvis. Essentially, it is the movement of your body bouncing up and down while you are running. By tracking this you can understand if you are wasting your energy on upward movement instead of propelling yourself forward.
If you are coming into running after sitting down at a desk job or just haven’t laced up your shoes in a bit, something to consider while running is your pelvic rotation. Because your hip flexors can become tighter after a long period of sitting or inactivity you may have a tendency to over-stride. Resulting in injury. Lumo tracks your pelvic rotation, which is the side-to-side motion of the pelvis and allows you to correct this.
Another very common running ailment is known as “knocked-knees”. This could be treated by understanding your pelvic drop. Otherwise referred to as the side-to-side lowering of your pelvis. As Lumo is one of the only trackers on the market that has data on pelvic drop it may be useful to get your running in peak form.
